Rep. Vargas’ California New River Restoration Act Included in Monumental Infrastructure Bill
Washington, D.C. (July 1, 2020) – Rep. Vargas’ (CA-51) California New River Restoration Act of 2020 was included as an amendment to H.R. 2 Invest in America Act, which passed the House today. The legislation will implement projects, plans, and initiatives for the restoration and protection of the New River in Imperial County.
“I’m very pleased that language from my California New River Restoration Act of 2020 was included as an amendment to the Invest in America Act,” said Rep. Vargas. “We need cost-effective projects with measurable results. The legislation will authorize restoration and conservation projects needed to protect the well-being of Imperial Valley residents.”
Once enacted, the legislation will establish the California New River Restoration Program. The program will provide grants and technical assistance for the planning and implementation of conservation strategies for the New River and the surrounding region.
In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency must provide a yearly report on the program’s status and what, if any, projects are being worked on.
“Infrastructure improvement and conservation programs are imperative to protecting public health and environmental safety at the border. I will continue working in Congress to secure funding to combat harmful pollution impacting our communities,” said Rep. Vargas. “The Senate must act quickly and pass this much-needed piece of legislation.”
Vargas represents California’s 51st Congressional District which includes the southern portion of San Diego County, all of Imperial County, and California’s entire U.S.-Mexico border. Vargas was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012 and is currently serving his fourth term in Congress.
